060409 - Day 4 - The day of the mountain

Charlottesville to Gerties country store in Vesuvious VA - 74.5 miles

We were all nervous for the day knowing that we would be climbing throughout! We started the day with some bagels and yogurt for breakfast at the Scheller's ... thank you again for you hospitality!

Our first stop was at the beautiful Chiles peach orchard & farm market in Crozet VA. I decided to prepare for the day by throwing down 6 doughnuts and a fruit smoothie. Our next stop was after the climb over Afton mountain. I munched down a can of beef stew and looking back this might have been what got me through the day. The remainder of the day was filled with an endless climb over the Blue Ridge Parkway. Luckily most of the day was filled with a light mist that kept us cool. The fog that covered the mountain blocked our view of the climb ahead which I think help keep our spirits high and our legs pumping. Chris, Leanna, and myself decided we hadn't had enough after an entire day of straight climbing so we missed our turn and rode 7 more miles of mountain before turning around for a 7 miles return.

At the top before turning back for our 7 mile return

We made to to Vesuvius and headed directly into Gerties store for a feast of delicious food. Thanks again to Gerty, Tammy, and Loyd for making our stay such a great one! The triple cheeseburger meal, ice cream bars, and drinks were just what I needed! It began to rain and we set up to camp behind the store for the night.
